The Burlington Eruv
Connecting our community. Enriching Shabbat.
What is an Eruv?
One of the observances of Shabbat is refraining from certain forms of work, including carrying between private and public domains.
An eruv establishes a defined area in which carrying is permitted under Jewish law. It allows families and individuals to enjoy Shabbat together more easily, bringing greater connection to community life.
A More Connected Shabbat
Within the eruv, those observing Shabbat can:
- Take children out in strollers.
- Carry permitted personal items.
- Bring food to a neighbor or share a meal with friends.
Eruvs serve Jewish communities around the world, helping neighbors come together and share the joy of Shabbat.
A Milestone for Burlington
After more than two years of collaboration with partners including Burlington Electric and Green Mountain Power, the Burlington Eruv is complete.
We believe the eruv will help make Burlington an even more welcoming home for observant Jewish families and support the growth of our synagogue and school community for generations to come.
