Burlington Eruv

  • The Burlington Eruv

    What is an Eruv?

One of the observances of Shabbat is a prohibition against many forms of labor, including carrying from a private space to a public domain.

An Eruv is a way to unify specific boundaries into one "domain" thereby allowing carrying of various items within its borders.

With an Eruv in place, community members observing Shabbat are able to do things like transport children in strollers, carry personal items, bring food over to a neighbor, etc. in adherence to Jewish law. Eruvs exist in Jewish communities all over the world and help foster communal interaction and connectivity.

After more than two years of collaboration with partners including Burlington Electric and Green Mountain Power, the Eruv in finally done.

We strongly believe the presence of an Eruv will make Burlington a more attractive place for observant Jewish families to live and will help our shul and school community continue to grow for decades to come.
